Celebrating the Unconditional Love of a Cat - International Cat Day

WAFFLES:  Uh, Boss? So what's an international cat day? Isn't everyday a cat day? For sure Wednesdays, right?

KATIE:  Waffles, it's much more than Wednesdays... though you're right that everyday should be a cat day. But today is a day to recognize all the cats that aren't as lucky as we are. All the cats that need to be rescued, all the cats waiting in shelters for their true forever homes.

WAFFLES:  You mean there's cats that don't have a Glogirly and a Gloman and a pillow and a wand toy and a –

KATIE:  Millions, Waffles. Millions.

WAFFLES:  I don't think I can count that high.

KATIE:  I don't think you can either.

WAFFLES:  So this means we're really lucky, right?

KATIE:  Yes. And that's why today is also about celebrating the love we share with our families.

WAFFLES:  Celebrate? You mean like with party hats and stuff?

KATIE:  If you want to wear a hat, that's your deal. But the true meaning of today is the love.

WAFFLES:  A hat would still be cool.

International Cat Day:

Some Staggering Numbers:
According to the ASPCA -
  • Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year.
  • Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.
  • Each year, approximately 1.4 million cats are euthanized.
  • Approximately 1.3 million cats are adopted each year.
  • Of the cats entering shelters, approximately 37% are adopted, 41% are euthanized, and less than 5% of cats who came in as strays are returned to their owners.
  • About twice as many animals enter shelters as strays compared to the number that are relinquished by their owners. This means about 1.5 million cats are relinquished to shelters by their owners. Our hearts just sank.

  4. Mum says I need to come back and be serious. * cough * Especially as we re looking to help a disadvantaged cat, Bootsie. He was bumped by his 'loving parents' (HaHa) and now needs the love so he does not become a statistickle. You re right - Love it is - always.

  12. I am happy I am a survivor! I got in and out of the shelter TWICE! My first beans didn't want me back, then I got hooked up with mum. Yeah, I'm not going anywhere.

Derby, same thing, he got surrendered, but by an old lady who was going into a nursing home. He too found love and family with mum.

Happy Cat Day to us all.

  13. Happy Cat Day. Gemini didn't even make it to the shelter. She was a little semi feral cat who kept mewing in the Woman's condo complex. And well, we did find Ichiro there. UGH. I, of course, was being petted out by a breeder but naturally my amazingness was seen long before I had to go to a shelter...

  16. A beautiful tribute to all cats - those that are living in the lap of happy luxury - and to those that we hope will one day find their own special furever home. Purrs from Deb and the Zee/Zoey kitties!

  18. We purr that one day there won't be any homeless cats. We know that's probably unrealistic, but we can dream, can't we??

    Happy World Cat Day!

  19. Such horrific statistics, and such a beautiful post. If only we lived in a world where every cat was cherished as they deserve to be.

  20. We didn't know til we visited Cat Chat w/Caren & Cody that it was founded by IFAW and was a REAL day set aside to raise awareness and not a made-up thing like National Knit in Public Day (which we're totally in support of, by the way, and mean no disrespect to and stuff, because you know, like, we don't want any mad knitting grannies out there mad at us or anything)
We're gonna make the mom stop typing and hit publish now. HA!
