Catch Me If You Can, Mr. Waffles!

Today's blog post is one of our favorites from 2020, shortly after Miss Ellie became part of our family. It's one of our fur-favorites and we hope you enjoy it too! Ellie has grown up quite a bit since these photos, but she's still a little peanut compared to Waffles in all his mancatly glory!

ELLIE:  Hey, Mister Waffles. I bet you can't catch me!

WAFFLES:  Did she seriously just say that?

ELLIE:  Bet you can't! Bet you can't!

WAFFLES:  Oh yeah? I'm like Supercat. I can leap tall scratching posts in a single bound.

ELLIE:  Did you say SUPERCAT???

WAFFLES:  Single bound, Ellie. Single bound.

ELLIE:  Just a little higher...almost there.

WAFFLES:  Almost is still just almost.

ELLIE:  Only a tiny bit more...if I could just...

WAFFLES:  Here, let me give you a paw.

ELLIE:  Hey, wait a minute! Where'd you go? Supercat???

About Today's Photos
Waffles has been hard at work teaching Ellie how to use the scratching post. She's starting to understand the scratching aspect of it all, but hasn't yet managed to make it to the top. She wants to SOOO badly! Glogirly even put a smaller scratcher next to the pole to help her, but she's still just a little too tiny to make it to the summit.

Soon, Ellie Belly. Soon you'll be a Supercat too.

Rain Dancing

ELLIE:  I sure hope the birds and chipmunks took swimming lessons, Mr. Waffles! It keeps raining and raining. And Mr. Sun keeps playing hide and seek. Plus, Glogirly and Gloman doing their happy dance? I hope they know how to swim too.

WAFFLES:  Rain is supposed to be good for wildfires, Ellie. That's why Glogirly and Gloman are dancing. Pretty sure the sun will be back super soon. Me and Mr. Sun are tight. In the meantime, you really should take advantage of all the nice napping blankets around here. Just be sure to–

ELLIE:  Keep my distance. Don't encroach and stuff. Whatever that means.

WAFFLES:  Exactly. Sometimes a mancat needs his space.

Roller Coaster Weather

One this is for certain when it comes to weather in the rocky mountains. Absolutely nothing.

We can experience four seasons in four hours. Just a little over a week ago, we were longing for the days of our Minneapolis air conditioning. Nobody, including us, has A/C here in the mountains. There are really only a small handful of days that it would be nice to have it and the temperatures always cool off beautifully in the evenings and overnight. Nature is our air conditioner. That said, just a few days ago we were pretty miserable. It was in the upper 80s up here at 8,000 feet. And in the direct sun it was probably reaching up into the 90s. (Over 100 in Denver!)

For the past couple of days we've been enjoying unseasonably cool temperatures mixed with some very well needed rain. Wildfires are a really concern for us, so any amount of moisture is truly a gift. That's why Glogirly and Gloman are doing their happy dance.

But even with rain, we're still at an extremely high risk for wildfires. Thunder and lightening can be extreme at elevation and just last night, lightening struck a tree in another part of our canyon and started a small fire. Our firefighters were out in the dark with headlamps searching for it's location. They even tried to spot it from a residents deck. This morning they used a drone to pinpoint it, and had crews ready to pounce. Shortly after they were able to contain it. It was just under an acre in size. We sure LOVE our firefighters.

To all our friends that are experiencing severely high temperatures - Please stay safe and hydrated. Keep a special eye on your furry family members as well as seniors and anyone with compromised health concerns. We hope we can share some of our cooler weather with you very soon.

Thank You, Thank You!

Glogirly wants to send a special THANK YOU to our friends and readers who wished her a happy birthday last week. Birthday wishes make her trips around the sun extra fun!

Birthday Week!

ELLIE:  Whatcha got, Mr. Waffles? Is that our birthday present for Glogirly? Does she like orange snakes? Because I LOVE orange snakes.

WAFFLES:  I'm thinking she's not much of a snake fan, Ellie. Even orange furry ones like this.

ELLIE:  So what are we going to give her for her birthday? Should we go shopping? You know, like online and stuff?

WAFFLES:  You're still pretty young, Ellie. So you may have not learned this yet. The kitty that came before you–

ELLIE:  You mean the Boss? Katie?

WAFFLES:  Yes, Katie. She taught me that it's not about shiny new wand toys, furry fake snakes, or catnip filled mouses. It's not even about chicken treats.

ELLIE:  Not about chicken treats??? Seriously?!

WAFFLES:  I know. At first I thought that was all just crazy talk.

ELLIE:  So what do we give her, Mr. Waffles? Because it's got to be super special and stuff.

WAFFLES:  The best present we could ever give her is to fill her heart with love.

ELLIE:  But how do we do that, Mr. Waffles?

WAFFLES:  It's easy, Ellie. You know how much she loves it when we're together, right?

ELLIE:  I think so.

ELLIE:  You mean like this? You mean THIS is all we have to do to give her the best present ever?

WAFFLES:  This is all we have to do, Ellie.

WAFFLES:  Extra credit for head butts.

Happy Birthday to our Girl!!!

This coming Tuesday, July 19, is a very special day here in the mountains. It's our girl's birthday! She probably isn't going to divulge just how many years she's celebrating...she doesn't want to blow Waffles' mind with such big numbers.

Glogirly and Gloman already celebrated at one of their favorite restaurants over the weekend with Champagne and yummy food. Tomorrow, Glogirly is going to see James Taylor with a dear friend. There will be lots of kitty and Gloman cuddles all week. ...but that's pretty much how every week is!

The best gift in the world is being together. Glogirly, Gloman, Waffles, and Ellie - It's what makes all our hearts happy and full.

Moth Hunters

WAFFLES:  Be very, very still, Ellie.

ELLIE:  Why, Mr. Waffles? What are being still for?

WAFFLES:  We're on the hunt.

ELLIE:  What are we hunting, Mr. Waffles?

WAFFLES:  Careful, Ellie. No sudden moves.

ELLIE:  It's a bird! It's a plane! It's, it's–

WAFFLES:  It's SUPER MOTH!

ELLIE:  What's a super moth, Mr. Waffles?

WAFFLES:  It's the most giantest of the giant moths.

ELLIE:  How giant is giantest?

WAFFLES:  Known to grab eight pound grey and white cats named Ellie and fly off with them.

ELLIE:  I don't know, Mr. Waffles. He looks pretty small to me. Looks like a bug with baby wings.

About Today's Photos

It's officially summer moth season here in the mountains. In the evening they're super attracted to the lights and if we even slip out one of the doors, one usually zooms inside. Those that don't make it inside, hover close by. Waffles and Ellie LOVE moth hunting. The bathroom windows seem to attract more of these flying friends than any other windows. Lucky for the outside moths, there's a heavy duty screen keeping them safe and out of reach. In fact, that probably makes the hunt even more fun.

It's a Kitty 4th of July Flashback!

It's the 4th of July and we thought it would be super fun to relive one of our July 4 blog posts from years ago...2016 to be exact. Katie and her sassy sarcasm was still with us and Waffles was his usual goofy, food-obsessed self. Happy 4th of July, dear friends. Be safe, be joyful, and know we love you.

WAFFLES:  Hey Boss! Happy 4th of July!

KATIE:  Waffles, do you even know what the 4th of July is?

WAFFLES:  Uh... the 4th of July???

KATIE:  Wow, Waffles. Nothing gets past you.

WAFFLES:  Thanks, Boss!

KATIE:  Today's the day we celebrate our country's birthday.

WAFFLES:  Cool! I'm going to decorate for the party.  There's cake, right?

KATIE:  No cake, Waffles. It's not that kind of birthday.

WAFFLES:  No CAKE??? What a rip-off. I bet the country's going to be pretty mad there's no cake.

KATIE:  Waffles, not EVERYTHING is about food you know.

WAFFLES:  Are you sure??

KATIE:  On July 4, 1776, our country's founders signed the Declaration of Independence and the United States of America became, well... the United States of America.  Each year we celebrate our nation's birthday with family reunions, potato salad and fireworks.

KATIE:  Now hurry up and get under the bed.

Happy 4th of July to all our US friends!
And special thanks to our Military Heroes–
The Servicemen, Women & Animals that keep our country safe.

Please keep your pets safe too.

  1. Provide a safe and quiet room for them to comfortably hide during loud fireworks.
  2. Keep windows and doors shut.
  3. Turn on some soft music.
  4. Use calming aids like Feliway sprays or diffusers.
  5. Just act normal. If you're stressed or show concern for your cat, they'll sense something is wrong.

WAFFLES:  I still say there should be cake.
