American Gothic Cats

Hi everyone, Katie here.

I'm giving Waffles Too an art history lesson today. Glogirly first learned about American painter Grant Wood's American Gothic way back when she was a kid and received a Masterpiece board game for Christmas. Her parents both had grown up on farms and she was grateful whe didn't have to wear clothes like the farmer and his wife wore in the famous painting.

She studied art and design in college and eventually saw the painting in person at the Art Institute of Chicago.

 American Gothic by Grant Wood
 Art Institute of Chicago
Did you know?

☛ Wood had to ask permission of the Jones family in Eldon, Iowa to paint their house.
(I wonder if they knew he wasn't actually going to PAINT their house!)

☛ The woman in the painting is Wood's sister.
(Glogirly says if anyone put HER in an apron and painted her...well, it wouldn't be pretty.)

☛ The man in the painting is Wood's dentist.
(Glogirly is sure glad HER dentist doesn't use a pitchfork.)

☛ In 1930 Wood won a bronze medal and a $300 cash prize from the Art Institute of Chicago for his painting.

KATIE:  Step AWAY from the pitchfork, Waffles.

WAFFLES TOO:  Um, Boss?  I can't move. I'm stuck inside this painting.

Announcing the 2013 BlogPaws Nose-to-Nose Awards!
Nominations are now open through 3:00pm EST Friday, March 8

According to BlogPaws, the Nose-to-Nose Awards is the only awards program in which pet bloggers and microbloggers are judged on their expertise, creativity and performance by a panel of distinguished professionals.

But YOU are the ones who nominate

There are 12 categories and you can nominate as many blogs as you'd like. You can even nominate a blog for multiple categories. But I don't think you can nominate a cat for Best Bark Blog.

There are so many amazing pet bloggers out there who deserve recognition.
Glogirly and I are nominating the blogs we love to visit and hope you will too!
It's a perfect way to thank them for the all they share with us.

If you choose to nominate us (♥) you will need the following details:

  1. We would stay far away from that pitchfork!!

    The Florida Furkids

  2. The thought of a dentist with a pitchfork is frightening to many humans!

  3. I have to look at those nominations. There should be BlogHooves....

  4. These people just beam, don't they? :-)

People really were able to enjoy life in these times! (I am joking, I just want to flee when I see this picture, and not because of the pitchfork!)

    Smoochies to you, kitties!

  5. I got both Masteriece and Clue one year for Christmas. I combined both games and created murders and arts thefts that had to be solved. It was very fun and exciting! I hadn't thought of those games in years! Thanks for the memories!

  7. We have to say we like your pic better than Woods'. Just sayin.

  8. I think you could fit more than one fish on your pitchfork, and it would be brilliant for sossidges!!

  9. Wow that has improved the picture. We agree sossidges on the fork would help too. Have a terrific Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

  10. Love this version of the painting! :-)

  11. That's quite a pitchfork Better eat the fish while it's still fresh!

  12. We like how that pitchfork can spear fishies! That could come in very handy.

  13. Me and my mom-person LIKE your version much better than the original <3
The original looks furry creepy !

    Benny & Lily

  18. Hi Katie, we like the updated painting/picture waaaaayy better. My dad thinks that both people in the picture look a bit scary. For sure, Wood's sister looks very severe -

  19. I remember this well from art history class but cats improve everything. I loved the cat art master series with Mona Lisa etc. Btw, I finally figured out how to leave a here comment with a gravatar on Blogger!

  20. I like your version of the painting better. The fishie on the pitchfork adds that certain "je ne sais quoi".
My mom says she's pretty sure her dentist DOES use a pitchfork.
    Play bows,

  21. Your version of the painting is a lot more fun Katie...Momz sez she can't imagine anyone wanting to paint their dentist

  22. Great art lesson! I feel so refined now - ha, ha!

  23. The dress looks much better on Katie than on Grant's sister. And that Waffles looks very grown up!
There are a zillion versions of this painting. I wonder if Grant Wood would be flattered or annoyed...

  24. Thanks for the history lesson. Mom says she know the background of this photo at one time but had forgotten it. We love the fish speared on the pitchfork. When checking out today's post, Mom had to go back to yesterday to look again at those heart-warming photos. Purrs and hugs from the kitties at, Lily Olivia, auricle, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette

  25. Katie we think you and W2 make a much better American Gothic!

  26. That doesn't look like a salmon on your cameo. heh heh

  27. Me likes your version better than Mr Woods!
Is yous going to do Botticelli's birth of Venus? Me would LOves to holds the robe for yous.
