The Tree

Hi everyone, Katie here.

I should have known. So many clues. The turkey: Gone. Pumpkin pie: Nothing but a couple of crumbs. Mashed potatoes: Are you kidding? Gone. All that remains is a huge pile of useless cranberry sauce. Ick.

More clues. Gloman has not been working. He's been spending a considerable amount of time watching bad TV and eating cheese.

And Glogirly is talking Tree. Christmas tree.

So off they went in the big SUV. Their mission: The perfect Chiristmas tree. Well, that was Glogirly's mission. Gloman's mission was A tree, ANY tree, as quickly as possible while avoiding traffic, crowds and lines. This was the day after Thanksgiving mind you, so Gloman's mission was somewhat naive. And when it comes to the picking of the Christmas tree, I bet you can guess who's the boss in this townhouse.

I heard they drove for over an hour to find the big tree farm out in the country. Hampton Hills it's called. Whenever Gloman drives to the tree farm, he loves to yell, "We're goin' to the Hamptons!" ... just like George Costanza does in one of his favorite Seinfeld episodes.

I heard that Glogirly insisted on a Fraser Fir. But Gloman thought the only REAL Christmas trees were the ones with the LONG needles. I'm sure his opinion had more to do with the whole traffic, crowd, lines thing though.

Eventually they returned with the perfect tree. I nearly starved while they were gone. Gloman hoisted the giant fir up onto the 2nd floor balcony, just outside the sliding glass doors, so as not to leave a trail of tree parts scattered throughout the townhouse. He took care of the manly duties like giving it a fresh and reasonably straight cut, placing it in the rickety tree stand and finally, attempting to make it stand up straight. Most of this was performed outside on the 2nd floor balcony with the door shut so I could not hear what he was saying. I could tell the conversation between him and the tree wasn't going well.

Once he dragged the giant fir inside and positioned it as per Glogirly's direction, he promptly returned to the sofa to and resumed the cheese eating and bad TV watching.

I took a quick look at the tree and high tailed it upstairs so that I could supervise the progress without getting in trouble.

If I've learned one thing over the past few Christmases, I've learned that when Glogirly is decorating the tree, she does NOT welcome help. I've tried. I have a real eye for this kind of stuff you know. But she will have none of me.

Once the heavy decorating and vacuuming was complete, it was safe for me to come closer. I like to sit as close as I can without actually touching. Or without getting caught touching.

You know what they say about "when the cat's away?" Well, when Glogirly is away, THIS cat will most definitely play.

  1. Katie, that is a nice present your parents bought you. Years ago, my mum lived with some friends, and when they bought their tree home their two cats were VERY interested in it. 3 weeks after Christmas, they found a very bedraggled sparrow in the lounge, who had obviously spent 5 weeks trapped in the tree surviving on eating crumbs and hiding from the cats.

  6. I don't want to give you any ideas, but Yellow Kitty loves to pat the round things on the tree and watch them bounce. Her mother, she is gone now, liked to sit up inside the tree branches and watch people go by. I would think that would be uncomfortable though. You look great on the Christmas ornament, but why I am telling you that, you look great on everything. Enjoy your outdoor adventure, inside, as it won't last long. Next time tell your people to leave you a fancy feast on a glass dish before they go driving all over the country.

  10. Katie...we love when the tree goes up! 'Cept our mom learned the hard way that she can't have a "live" tree anymore...so we get a fake one...can you believe that??? And she won't put it up right away because we don't wait until they are away...we play in that tree and knock those shiney things off...

Oh, you're gonna have so much fun!

  11. I am with Glogirly - Fraser or Douglas fir - or else the ornaments get lost among the needles and you can't see them!
You are very mature kitty to know that you need to keep your distance when Glogirly decorates your new climbing post ;)

  13. Hi Glogirly and Katie! Thanks for coming to visit Dante and saying hello. This is the first time we are seeing your blog. Katie looks very pretty sitting beside the lighted tree. I'll bet she'll have lots of fun playing with the ornaments and maybe even climbing the tree later when you're gone.

I saw your comment about the two Maine Coon cousins -- I take it they are the sweet looking red babies in the pilgrim outfits. Are these your kitties? What are their names?
    So cute.

Also, Dante has a tuxy sister named Domino who appears on one of my other blogs. Maybe Katie and Domino can be furiends. The link to my 3-D Cats blog is:

  14. How fun Katie! I can hardly wait for ours. Next weekend, mom and dad will take Grete woofie for the tree hunt. It will be Grete's first time doing this because last year Grete was recovering from elbow surgery and she had to stay home. You know who gets to pick the tree in this family...Grete. We will have fun whapping the ornaments too!

You look so ready for action in that last picture Katie.

  25. Today one of those green things showed up in my living room too. I keep trying to get into it but the mom isn't letting me. I will have plenty of time when she is gone to investigate. I agree with you about playing when, the good old saying. We all know about the mice but when the mom is away the cats really PLAY!

I see some purrfectly wonderful dangly things for you to play with while GloGirl is away! Oh guess what? Last night, Ping got up on top of the bookcase where Mom has one of her decorated trees and he knocked it off. It went KA-BOOM, all those pretty dangly things all over the floor, lights knocked out. *whew* I'm glad I didn't do it.
