Who's YOUR Best Friend?

WAFFLES:  Hey Boss? What's a best friend?

KATIE:  Someone you like hanging out with.

WAFFLES:  I like hanging out with you. What else?

KATIE:  Someone you can talk to, laugh with, watch the birds with.

WAFFLES:  Ooooh! I love watching Bird TV with you, Boss! What else?

KATIE:  Someone, who regardless of where they come from or what color their fur is, you accept and love just the way they are.

WAFFLES:  It's ok that you're crabby sometimes, Boss. I love you just the way you are.

KATIE:  Gee, thanks.

WAFFLES:  Boss?

KATIE:  Waffles?

WAFFLES:  You're my BEST friend.

Lucky Cats

WAFFLES:  Hey Boss! What are you looking at?

KATIE:  I'm not really looking. I'm just thinking.

WAFFLES:  What are you thinking about? Chicken?

KATIE:  No, Waffles. There's more to life than just chicken, you know.

WAFFLES:  Turkey? Tuna?

KATIE:  NO, Waffles. We're just very lucky.

WAFFLES:  You've GOT to be talking about chicken!

KATIE:  We're the lucky cats, Waffles. Somehow, we were chosen. With me it was Gloman. And with you it was Glogirly. They chose us. They didn't even know us, but they loved us from the very first moment they saw us. We're the lucky cats, Waffles. We have a safe home where there's always breakfast and dinner and treats and toys. We have a family.

WAFFLES:  Doesn't everycat have that?

KATIE:  No Waffles. Not even close.

WAFFLES:  What can we do? We're just a couple of cats. Pretty small cats. How can we ever do anything big enough to help all those cats?

KATIE:  Well, small is ok. Because lots of smalls can make something BIG.

Because it Does the Heart Good to Say Thank You

We're pausing this Memorial Day to remember the people we love and say thank you. Friends, family, teachers, soldiers... some we've known our whole lives. They've touched our hearts and helped shape who we are.  Some remain nameless and anonnymous, having given so much, so selflessly, for this beautiful place we call home.

From Glogirly

To her Dad,
"Thank you for showing me the good and joy in everything and everyone. And thank you for teaching me the power of optimism. You will always be my hero."
~ Glogirly

To her Mom,
"Thank you for inspiring me to study hard, dream big and love unconditionally. And thank you for showing me how the simplest of things can create the biggest of joys."
~ Glogirly

From Katie
To Gloman,
"Thank you for rescuing me, loving me and truly understanding me. ...and for our private cuddles safe out of Waffles' reach."
~ Katie

From Waffles
To Glogirly,
"Thanks for choosing me to be your special small man. And thank you for letting me get away with just about anything because I'm so cute. And handsome. Definitely handsome."
~ Waffles

From All of us at the Townhouse
To Our Friends & Readers,
"Thank you for smiling, giggling and sharing our lives with us. You mean more to us than you will ever know."
~ Glogirly, Gloman, Katie & Waffles

Another Mother
A story of love. Lost & found.

On this special day of remembrance, we invite you read a true story of love, tenacity and discovery – Glogirly's work-in-progress memoir of her search for where she came from and the courageous young woman who loved her enough to let her go.

Finding a Forever Home through the Power of a Feather

Hi everyone, Katie here.

It wasn't until after we clicked *publish* on our blog post announcing all of the winners in our giveaway gala last week that something really amazing and wonderful struck us.

All the shelter names and logos, all the addresses we had compiled, prizes big and small... a wash of emotion overcame us as we thought about the significance of single toy.

Glogirly was reminded of a Sunday afternoon in November, just a year and a half ago, when she drove out to the Animal Humane Society of Buffalo, Minnesota to meet the orange kitten she'd found on Petfinder.com just hours before.

L-R: Jackson (now Waffles) & Herbie
The shelter volunteers introduced to her to "Jackson" and "Herbie." They brought her to a quiet room with the tiny orange boys and handed her a wand toy.

L-R: Herbie & Jackson (now Waffles)
She sat on the floor, playing with them for the longest time. They jumped and flipped and twirled...everything new and exciting, they each had wonder in their eyes.

And yes, the thought of bringing them BOTH home was a serious consideration. There was another family visiting though ... a mom, dad, a little boy and girl, that really wanted to adopt one of the kittens.

After an hour or so, "Jackson" decided he'd had enough feather chasing. He hopped onto Glogirly's lap, curled into a little ball and stretched his neck up high, gazing right into her eyes. He purred with the sweetest of smiles. That was it. Glogirly had found Waffles and Waffles had found us.

That play session at the shelter with the wand toy...it was a bonding experience that Glogirly will never forget.

It warms out hearts to think of all the shelter cats who will have an opportunity to play with one of the toys that was donated on behalf of our readers. It's one step closer to a human connection for those cats. And one step closer to a forever home.

Thank you so much to our generous sponsors and to our loving readers for helping making a difference in the lives of shelter cats. One feather at a time.

Cuteness Overload with Feline Rescue's Momma Freyja & Her NINE Kittens (!)

Freyja

Hi everyone, Katie here.

For the past 10 weeks, a very special Momma-Cat and her litter of NINE (yes, you read that right) kittens have stolen the hearts of thousands of cat-loving social media fans.

We didn't even know about them until we hosted a special Thanksgiving giveaway sponsored by the generous kitty lounger people at Peach Industries. The winner's prize was a beautiful kitty lounger to donate to their favorite rescue shelter. The winner chose Feline Rescue, Inc.,  a shelter very near (really! it's just a few miles away) and dear (we love them) to our hearts.

When Glogirly contacted the shelter to share the news, they knew JUST who needed this lounger the most.

Meet Freyja
Only three days after giving birth to nine kittens, she was in need of a miracle. Her previous owners' landlord said the kittens had to go. And we're not talking a one month or even two week notice here. They needed a home and FAST.

Enter Feline Rescue, a no-kill cat shelter located in St. Paul, Minnesota with an amazing outreach program and a network of loving volunteer foster homes. A sweetheart guy with a heart of gold, offered to take in Freyja and her 3-day old kittens. We haven't met Jon Bidinger, or even spoken to him, but we hold a very special place for him in our hearts. It can't be easy fostering a brood of nine...10 if you count Momma Freya.

We first shared Freyja and her furry family on December 29 in a Squeee-ful Sunday blog post. Since then we've received so many requests to share an update.

A Model Momma
Jon, the head cat herder and foster dad, describes Freyja as a great mother. "She was always patient and made sure everyone got fed." After two weeks though, her body just couldn't produce enough milk so Jon helped out by bottle feeding 4 or 5 times a day until the kittens stared to eat kibble and gushy food on their own. "Even with the gushy food, Freyja waits until the kittens are done eating until she eats. She is amazing!"

The Kittens!
Everyone wants to know... "Girls? Boys? Names???"
Freyja is mom to 5 girls and 4 boys.

The kittens are just about big enough to be adopted... and many have already been pre-adopted! Once they reach 3 pounds and their spay/neuter surgeries are complete, they're ready for new forever homes.

Little Girl Turtle
Turtle, in particular, has really stolen hearts. In fact, we just learned that foster-dad Jon is adopting her. Turtle is a very special girl. Always the instigator, she was the first of the kittens to climb out of the enclosure. She's brave, active, playful... and just a little bit naughty. (sounds like someone I know!)

Turtle and Freyja have a very special bond. They play together and have a close connection. Turtle and Jon are going to have a wonderful and happy life together.

Waiting for Adoption!
Only two kittens, Thor & Sunna, and Momma Freyja are still waiting to be adopted. After everything sweet Freyja has been through, after all the love she's shown her kittens, she deserves a loving home with ALL the comforts!

Do you have room in your heart and home for these beautiful cats? Just contact our friends at Feline Rescue for more information on Freyja, Thor, Sunna and MANY other wonderful cats and kittens just waiting for a forever family to say, "I love YOU."

Mmmmm, This Camera Strap is Yummy!
I bet you're wondering where all of these beautiful photographs came from! Glogirly had the pleasure of meeting Kris Kaiser, the photographer extraordinaire who volunteers her time photographing Feline Rescue's cats and kittens living in private foster homes.

Freyja and her kittens stole Kris' heart too. She says that no matter how bad your day might be, when you can end it with kittens, all is right in the world.

Photos Make a Difference
Professional quality photos of shelter cats can make or break their chances of being adopted. Kris Kaiser's photos have certainly made a difference for the Feline Rescue cats. Her images are used on their website, Petfinder.com and Feline Rescue's Facebook page. With social media playing such a significant role in raising awareness and finding homes for shelter pets, what Kris is able to give is priceless.

Kris' adorable photo of Knute (The Cute) just took second place in Animal Rescue Site's photo contest. She won $500 for Feline Rescue!

And today, WE all get to enjoy an overload of cute!

Thank You
Purrs, headbonks and thank you's to Feline Rescue and their amazing network of volunteers, including Jon & Kris. And special thanks to our generous sponsor, Peach Industries. You are all making a difference in the lives of homeless cats and you make our hearts smile!

About the Photographer
Kris Kaiser shares her home and heart with Kitty Whompus, a beautiful 17 year-old tuxedo girl. She adopted Kitty from the St. Cloud Animal Humane Society when she was only 6 weeks old. When she decided she wanted to help homeless cats, she contacted Feline Rescue to offer her photography services. They were of course thrilled! In less than a year's time, she's photographed almost 60 cats and kittens.

Ray Charles & Sister Rachel: The Finding Home Tour

Hi everyone, Katie here.

We bet many of you have heard about Ray Charles & Sister Rachel, the two sweet brother-sister kittens looking for a special forever home together. We learned about them through our friend Brian of Brian's Home Blog.

The Power of Social Media – It Just Takes ONE
Well you know what they say about social media...you just never know who might be reading. It only takes one person in the right place at the right time to save a life. Or in this case 2 lives. That's why we are taking a time out from our usual antics to bring you the story of Ray & Rachel in hope you just might know someone, maybe even you, that has enough room in their heart and home for these two sweeties.

About Ray & Rachel
They were rescued together from a Greenville, SC trailer part where they were part of a feral cat colony. Some of the people in the park were not very kind to the innocent kitties living there. Somehow Ray & Rachel made it out alive.

Both were born with a genetic condition called Entropian, which affects the eyelids and causes them to fold inward, against the cat's eye. Thankfully both kitties had surgery to alleviate the condition.  Rachel can see perfectly fine now. She looks a little different from some other kitties, but that's just part of what makes her so special.

Ray can see, it's just hard to know how much or how clear his sight is. But he's no different than any playful, happy, energetic kitten. We've learned from our friend Homer and all the kitties of Blind Cat Rescue that you don't need your eyes to see love. Even cats that cannot see at all have no idea they're blind. They just know they're cats. They jump, they climb, they chase bugs. They're brave and fearless.

Finding Home Tour Graphics by GLOGIRLY DESIGN

A lot of wonderful people have come together to create a 'hope chest' for Ray & Rachel – gift cards, food, blankets, toys and more. There's a world of love out there for these two resilient little kitties. There's just one thing missing. A forever home.

Can you help?
• Spread the word by sharing this post on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest & Google+.
• Download the Ray & Rachel FLYER and send it to your friends and contacts via email.
• Are you a blogger? Write a blog post to help get the word out!
• Stand on your rooftop and ... well, only if you're not scared of heights.

It may take a village to get the word out, but it only takes ONE heart and home to adopt these beautiful kittens.

Glogirly Visits The Kitties Of Feline Rescue, Inc

Glogirly and her new furiend, Cody
all photos by © Gloman 2013
Hi everyone, Katie here.

We want to introduce you to some VERY special kitties today.

Glogirly and her friend Angie Bailey (of the hilarious blog, Catladyland) recently visited the kitties of Feline Rescue Inc. in Saint Paul, Minnesota to share some exciting news. When we both were presented with BlogPaws Nose-to-Nose Awards in May, we received something MUCH better than trophies or treats. We each received 400 pounds of Petcurean cat food to donate to the rescue shelter of our choice.

Angie's hoping to be invited inside orange boy Black Foot's hidey hole. Since we visited he's been adopted!
Louie is loving Angie's arms.  Read Louie's story HERE.

Angie and Glogirly wanted to do something EXTRA special for one of their favorite hometown shelters. So they decided to combine their donations and give Feline Rescue 800 pounds of food. I did the math and that's about as much food as both Waffles and I would eat in TEN years! ...and we all know what a food hog Waffles is.

Feline Rescue is one of the little guys making a BIG difference in the lives of homeless cats. They're an ALL-volunteer, NO-kill cat rescue organization with shelter, foster and outreach programs.
Glogirly can't help herself with the orange sweetheart, Kanga. Read Kanga's story HERE.
Bella Donna just might be ready for a little mani-pedi! Read Bella Donna's story HERE.

Their shelter facility can house up to 70 cats. They have special rooms for FEL+ and FIV+ cats, quiet spots, even dedicated areas that provide privacy for cats that are very scared and are in need of socialization rehabilitation. Glogirly saw first hand how much time and care they take to help these cats feel comfortable and safe. They work one-on-one with them until they are ready for adoption.

All of the cats in the shelter facility are adults. A network of foster homes provide care for the kittens until they are adopted into forever homes.

Rufio and Tux T have a cozy hangout built for two.
In addition to safe shelter, Feline Rescue also provides rescue and relief to the homeless and endangered cats in our community through programs that offer foster care, social and medical rehabilitation, feral and stray management, spay/neuter subsidy and community education.

Main Coone Ray Charles LOVES his neck scritches. Meanwhile Louie cued up in line, waiting his turn.
Feline Rescue's amazing volunteers are patient, kind and so compassionate. Their hearts burst with love for these beautiful animals.  How could we NOT want to reach out and help?

Waffles Background Check

Very first photo of Waffles Too at the Animal Humane Society
Hi everyone, Katie here.

Glogirly tells me you're falling over yourselves, wanting to know more about Waffles Too and where on earth he came from. Yesterday more than a couple of you commented that MY photo was dramatically smaller than Waffles'...some even wondered if I'd given up on MY blog. Well, I'm here to tell you this IS and will ALWAYS be, MY BLOG.

So I guess this means *I* have to tell you about the little orange maniac cat.

Late at night, when Glogirly should have been visiting my blogging friends, she was actually surfing the web, looking at kittens on Petfinder.com. She found two little orange boys at the Animal Humane Society of Buffalo, Minnesota. Buffalo is about 45 minutes west of my downtown Minneapolis townhouse. A long way to drive if you ask me. A week ago yesterday, she grabbed my PTU and left in a hurry. As I told you before, I thought she must have be taking my PTU to the trash.

While I was high-pawing myself at home over the demise of my PTU, she was playing with these two guys at the Humane Society.

L-R: Herbie & Waffles Too

The crazy guy doing a half-nelson on the white pawed kitten is Waffles Too. The shelter people called him Jackson. That's his brother Herbie, trying to escape his grip.

L-R:  Herbie & Waffles Too

Glogirly had a REALLY hard time deciding which kitten to adopt. She wanted them BOTH. Can you imagine??? Thank Cod she came to her senses and only brought ONE home. She said a very sweet family that was there adopted Waffle Too's brother as she was doing her paperwork. They also had a sister, but she'd been adopted the previous day.

Waffles and his sibs were surrendered as an unwanted litter. We don't really know anything else about him, like who his mom and dad are or if he was given any maple syrup early on.

Evidence has shown that Waffles Too is a trouble maker. Only four days after Glogirly brought him home, she discovered a strange lump in his armpit. She rushed back to the Vet (where Waffles actually has FUN...told you he was crazy) to find out what it was. Turns out it was a CAT BITE. Ok, I know what you're thinking. STOP right there. Waffles had been in quarantine ever since he arrived and I did NOT have ANY contact with him WHATSOEVER.

Waffles Too at the V-E-T

The Vet said that these things commonly show up days after the actual incident, so Waffles probably got in a tussle at the shelter. See? I TOLD you he was a trouble maker.

So now he's on a banana-flavored (bleh) oral antibiotic made for human kids because the bite got infected. He's so wiggly that it takes Glogirly AND Gloman to give him his medicine. For the record, I would NEVER be that difficult.

In the meantime, Waffles has been enjoying his luxurious accommodations in the Kitten Room...outfitted with all of MY stuff.  Glogirly sneaks in there all the time. She thinks I don't notice. Yeah, right.

Epilogue Part 3 - Past, Present, Future

Hi everyone, Katie here.

Well this is it. The last installment (at least for now) of Another Mother (formerly Searching For A Girl) is finally here. Glogirly is questioning whether or not I even remember how to blog anymore. It's not ME I'm worried about.

So get your kleenex ready for one last cry. No, not really. I think you'll be fine.

Chapter 17 - Beloved Mother And Sister
Epilogue Part 1 - Dad
Epilogue Part 2 - Your Questions Answered

When Glogirly came home from her most recent visit, she couldn't stop thinking about Alice, Dorothy, and her journey. On the last night of her stay, she sat at the dinner table late into the evening with Dorothy, Armi, Jim and their daughter Vicki. The conversation had turned to Alice and the adoption. Dorothy looked troubled and started to talk about the events leading up to the adoption. It became clear she was harboring a tremendous amount of guilt and had been for some time.

She confessed to Glogirly something so deeply personal, the table became still and quiet. When Alice found out she was pregnant and had told her parents, it was Dorothy who their father came to. He told Dorothy that it would be her responsibility to tell Alice that she couldn't keep her baby. That she would have to give the child up for adoption. He wasn't going to have anything to do with it and Dorothy needed to handle it. By herself.

Dorothy had a new baby of her own. Jeff was only a few months old. Alice loved Jeff. She loved children. Others trusted their children to her care. That's how she earned her living expenses. How was Dorothy going to tell her younger sister that she couldn't keep her baby? That she couldn't take care of it?

Dorothy did what she was told to do. Alice pleaded "Why?" "Why can't I keep my baby?" It broke Dorothy's heart to tell her that she couldn't take care of it, that the baby needed a family that could. Only God knows how she found the words to tell Alice what needed to be done. That's when Dorothy contacted a friend in social services and was referred to Children's Home Society.

Dorothy told Glogirly it was the hardest thing she ever had to do. It tore her apart and crushed Alice.

That's when Alice left San Luis Obispo to stay with a family she didn't know in Santa Barbara. That's when it became Alice's responsibility, as part of the agreement with Children's Home Society, to live with this family and help the mother, pregnant herself, care for her children. The irony of the situation was impossible to ignore.

After Glogirly was born, Alice went to stay with Dorothy and her family. She helped with Jeff who was just about 1 year old. She took care of him, played with him, changed his diapers. She loved him. A few months later, Dorothy came home from the doctor's office. Alice could tell just by looking at her. "Your pregnant! Again!" Alice was thrilled for her sister. Dorothy wanted to be happy and excited about the news. But she could see through to the sadness in her sister's eyes. She's carried that feeling with her all these years.

It's this conversation that Glogirly just couldn't shake when she returned to Minnesota. Once she was home, she pulled out the notes she had taken during her search, things she had jotted down on those first few phone calls, and she started to write.

That's how this all began. She decided it might be interesting to try out the story on the blog. The day the background report arrived, and after Glogirly read Gloman the four pages of single spaced type, he told her, "There's a book in this." This was a story that she would need to tell someday.

Well someday has come. The blog story is the first step. Glogirly has thought alot about how to turn her story into a book that people will actually buy and enjoy. She's thinking about her target audience and how to bring the story to life with more details and visual descriptions.

She's planning another trip to California to interview Dorothy and other family members so that she can dive much deeper into the story. She hopes these added details will help her paint a visual picture for the reader with her words.

She's thinking a good place to begin the story is not with her, but with Dorothy. Before Glogirly was even born. Probably with the conversation between Dorothy and her father. When he told her what she needed to do.

If you've been reading along from the start, you know that the story actually began with the title, Searching For A Girl. As each chapter took it's shape, a chapter title would emerge. It wasn't until chapter 12, when she wrote about Dorothy and Alice, that Glogirly understood what her story was really all about.

It's about an adoptive mother and a birthmother. It's about sisters, mothers and daughters. It's about Alice and Dorothy. And it's about a little girl that had not one, but three mothers.

Another Mother.

::

So Glogirly's pretty new to this. Okay, a complete and total rookie. She'd love your input, your feedback, and she'd love to hear your ideas on alternative titles for the book. She loves Another Mother, but isn't married to it. It probably needs a sub-headline. You know, like 'Another Mother - The story of blah, blah, blah.'

If you've got something you think is just right, please leave it for us in the comments! You can always email us too.

Thank you for reading.

And thank you for putting up with a severe lack of CAT. For a bunch of cat bloggers you're pretty devoted group. ; )

xo,
Glogirly & Katie

2023 UPDATE
It's been 12 years since we shared this story. So very much has happened since then. Glogirly continues to be in very close contact with her biological family and has made many, many visits to California. She's had to say goodbye to many family members who have passed away and feels incredibly blessed to have known known them and called them her family. She hopes to share many more details and stories of laughter, tears, but most of all love.
