WAFFLES: Boss! Did you see Glogirly? She's outside whapping weeds with the new weed whapper. She's got goggles on and everything!
KATIE: It's a weed whacker, not a whapper. And you're on the kitchen counter. Again.
WAFFLES: I'm just looking out the window.
KATIE: While you're on the counter.
WAFFLES: You're not going to tell, are you Boss?
KATIE: That depends.
WAFFLES: Depends on what?
KATIE: Depends on whether or not you can be quiet and leave me in peace while I watch Glogirly whack the weeds.
Weed Whacking?
Glogirly has been working on something called Wildfire Mitigation. That's a fancy way of saying she's doing stuff outside to make our house as safe as possible from wildfires. Last week a wildfire expert came out to the house to help us come up with a plan for all the things that need to be done. He's been a firefighter and fire chief for 12 years right here in Colorado.
Soon we'll be having a few trees removed to make the areas closest to our house more safe. There'll be a team of tree mitigation specialists with chainsaws, ropes, and winches that will handle the big stuff. Glogirly is doing some of the easier work herself, like trimming wild grass, smaller trees, and adding in more rock around the perimeter of our house.
Today she gave her new weed whacker it's first workout. But given how she came inside and collapsed on the sofa, we're thinking it's not the weed whacker that got the workout.
You both should go purr on Glogirly. It is hard work fire proofing a home.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the wildland urban interface. Be safe.
ReplyDeleteIt's Binga who's a weed WHAPPER, Waffles! That wacking sounds like hard work!
ReplyDeleteIn that last picture... is that an insect on the window, or a flower on the Waffles Collar?
ReplyDeleteGood on you glogirly. Always good to be organized in advanced.
ReplyDeleteGlogirly needs a nap.... that’s hard work!
ReplyDeleteMom uses a weed whacker to cut our grass here, but we have a small yard. Plus, Florida not really known for wildfires, not like out there. We hope everything gets done quickly to protect your home.
ReplyDeleteLots of work to keep you kitties safe!
ReplyDeleteGood work Glogirly! And technically we think Waffles was on the window sill
ReplyDeleteWhile we envy you all the views and the beauty, we do not envy you this... the idea of wildfires is so scary...
ReplyDeleteOh Waffles, you are too cute, looking out from the kitchen window! Your momma makes a lot of sense, getting the yard wildfire resistant. The danger is real.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Glogirly, you deserve your nap ! Purrs
ReplyDeleteI just listened to a podcast that talked about the prevention you can do to help prevent fires from spreading to your house. I had no idea there were things you could do like that, so it's interesting to read that you are doing that!
ReplyDeleteVery impressive that Glogirly is out there whacking the weeds!
ReplyDeleteMommy's sister lives in Colorado, too, and she's always sweeping up pine cones and needles and stuff. We like safe.
ReplyDeleteMum doesn't like the weed whacker, it makes her wrist go all wonky. So she doesn't use it as much as she really should.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! That's scary stuff that you didn't have to deal with in Minneaspolis. Apparently beauty comes with a price.
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea. glad you were able to find someone to help you through it all
