The Sun Before the Storm

WAFFLES:  Are you using that sun puddle, Boss?

KATIE:  Does it look like I'm using this sun puddle, Waffles?

WAFFLES:  Wanna trade places?

KATIE:  And leave my sun puddle?

WAFFLES:  My sun puddle is just in the shade.

KATIE:  Exactly.

WAFFLES:  So, does that mean yes? ........Boss?

KATIE:  Zzzzzz...

WAFFLES:  Ok, so how about we share this sun puddle?

KATIE:  Purr-sonal space, Waffles. You're getting awfully close. Hey, look! There's a new sun puddle over there in the kitchen. You better grab it while you can.

WAFFLES:  Wait! Where's he going?

KATIE:  It's Colorado, Waffles. One minute we've got sun puddles and the next we've got a blizzard.

Katie is right. One minute we're wearing sandals and the next we're looking for our snow boots. This weekend we were enjoying beautiful skies, warm sunshine, and mornings where we woke up above the clouds. We even had our first hummingbird visitors!

Fast forward to tomorrow (Monday) - We've got a winter storm warning between 6:00am Monday-6:00am Tuesday with a chance of 8-16" of spring snow. In other words, we might get a dusting or we might be digging out of 2'. Your guess is as good as our meteorologist's.

In the meantime, we're soaking up as much sun as we can!

How It All Started With Katie & Her Girl

Glogirly was recently invited by the Cat Writers' Association (CWA) to share her story of how she started writing about and photographing cats. It's part of a regular Friday Feature the organization has been publishing on Instagram and Facebook. We got to thinking that it might be something our friends and readers here might enjoy too.

In addition to her story, we've included a few of her favorite photos that accompanied the CWA Friday Feature. We hope you love them as much as she does.

When I was 7, my mom and I rescued a tiny kitten trapped in an abandoned shopping cart. That was it– I’ve loved cats ever since. It wasn’t until 10 years ago that I started my blog and picked up a camera. I’d been downsized from my 20-year career in retail design and found myself looking ahead to what’s next. I figured it might involve social media so I better get smart about it.

So I started a blog.

While staring lost at the computer, my husband chimed in, “Why don’t you have Katie (our cat) introduce the blog?” And so it began. I started writing in what I believed was my cat’s true voice and personality– Deliberate with words, whip-smart, with a dry, sarcastic wit. I could say ANYTHING as Katie. It was SO much easier than my own voice.

Soon after, I decided to up my photography game. My husband, an extremely talented photographer, has been my mentor, coach, and primary gear provider ever since. He’s my inspiration. I love looking at the world through his lens.

A few years into my blog, I fell in love with an orange kitten named Waffles. He became a regular on my blog and Katie’s polar-opposite sidekick.

He’s like a bright-eyed kid filled with wonder. He often mixes up his words and charms the ladies with his goofy brand of love. The camera loves him. He’s one of the most facially expressive cats I’ve ever seen and is a purr-fect compliment to Katie and her deadpan stare.

I think my blog really came into its own when I started voicing their conversations. My camera is always within reach and I take photos of them nearly every day.

My process is backward to how most people write. For me, the photos come first. I may have an idea for the storyline, but I upload all my photos to a draft first and then write the conversation. I love imaging what they might be saying to each other.

At first, it seemed kind of silly. But every once in a while I hear from a reader who tells me how much my cats and blog mean to them. How waking up to a giggle and smile from Katie and Waffles each day got them through a very difficult time. That’s what keeps me going. Making people laugh and smile. It’s the whole objective behind my blog and the photography that inspires it.

Dinner Party Cat Hangover

WAFFLES:  Why am I so sleepy, Boss?

KATIE:  Not now, Waffles. Party hangover. Need sleep.

WAFFLES:  I'm SOOOOOOOOOO tired, Boss. I totally have a party hangover. All those people that came to see me. All those laps. All the wand toys and feathers–

KATIE:  All that standing guard. Making sure no one came under the bed. These dinner parties are exhausting.

Dinner Party Cats
Over the weekend Glogirly and Gloman hosted a cocktail and dinner party for some of our canyon neighbors and friends. We've been here TWO whole years and wanted to celebrate how much our canyon friends mean to us.

We've always been city cats and this is the first time we've felt part of such a warm and welcoming small town community. Whether it's getting help changing a smoke alarm battery at the top of our 14' ceiling, plowing our crazy long and steep driveway, or lifting big, heavy boxes out of the Jeep...our neighbors are Johnny-on-the-spot to help us with whatever we need. Glogirly says it's the most wonderful community she's ever been a part of.

Waffles agrees. He was making new friends all night. And when the wand toys came out...well, it just doesn't get any better than that.

The next day, BOTH Katie and Waffles slept like they've never slept before. If there's such a thing as a party hangover for cats, they sure had a case of it!

Easter Bunnies, Teeth Fairies, and Santa Claws

WAFFLES:  Hey Boss!  Did the Easter Bunny leave you a quarter under your pillow last night?

KATIE:  No, Waffles. That's the Tooth Fairy.

WAFFLES:  The Easter Bunny left you TEETH?

KATIE:  No, Waffles. The Easter Bunny brings eggs and the Tooth–

WAFFLES:  You got EGGS under your pillow??? That must've been messy.

KATIE:  You've GOT to be kidding me. Is this how the conversation is going to go?

WAFFLES:  So what about Santa Claws. Does he ride with the Easter Bunny and the Teeth Fairy? Who drives?

KATIE:  Are we really having a conversation about whether the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, or Santa Claws have a drivers license?

WAFFLES:  Sheesh, this holiday stuff is confusing. At least I'm clear on the Great Leper Can.

About Today's Photos
Today's photo sare from WAY back in 2014. Waffles was only two years old and still had that kitten look about him. Even now, years later, there is still a lot of kitten in BOTH Waffles and Katie.

Wishing you and your furry families a Happy Easter, Happy Passover, and a very Happy Spring! 💕

Happy Cat Daddy Weekend!

WAFFLES:  So when's Gloman coming home, Boss? We need to talk about man stuff.

KATIE:  Any minute, Waffles. But Gloman and I have important conversations to catch up on. And I was here first.

WAFFLES:  But I was the first one out of our carriers when we moved here, Boss. Doesn't that make ME first?

KATIE:  That just means Glogirly unzipped your carrier before mine. A tactical error on her part for sure. But it has nothing to do with who was here first.

WAFFLES:   You mean on account of how you're way older than me?

Happy Visit!
Our Cat Daddy is popping in for a long weekend visit. We're having some friends and neighbors over to celebrate TWO whole years in Colorado.

We'be also got plenty of nap time and Netflix scheduled in.

And of course plenty of quality Cat Daddy time.

The Art of Bed Making

More during.

Still more during.

WAFFLES:  After is totally overrated.

The Best Part
Waffles and Katie may not agree on much, but they're certainly in agreement on bed making. Before and during are WAY more fun than after.

It was laundry day yesterday. Which on its own, is worthy of celebration. But a little bird told us that a certain special someone is coming home to visit.

Spring Snow Cats & a Special Thank You

WAFFLES:  What do you smell, Boss?

KATIE:  You mean besides an orange cat?

WAFFLES:  There's an orange cat outside our window???

KATIE:  Spring, Waffles. I smell spring.

WAFFLES:  But there's still snow outside, Boss. How can it smell like spring?

KATIE:  That's the magic of Colorado, Waffles.

WAFFLES:  It might be spring, but I don't want any of that white stuff touching my toesies.

Spring Snow
While other parts of the state was getting blasted with another bomb cyclone storm, we were enjoying a beautiful spring snowfall up here in the mountains.  We got about 9", but the day after we woke up to the most spectacular day. Blue skies and sunshine, snow kissing the trees, and a weather phenomenon called an "inversion."

An inversion is when the clouds are below us. Up here at 8,000' we can see the sun, but down below in Denver it's all clouds and overcast. Sometimes when the clouds are smooth, the mountain tops peek through and look like islands in the water.

This was the view of our driveway out our kitchen window. The snow on the road didn't last long though. By noon it was completely melted.

One of the most magical parts of spring in Colorado is how there can be snow on the ground, yet the temperatures are so warm, you barely need a jacket in the sun. It was warm enough to have our windows open too. There's nothing quite as fresh smelling as spring snow!

 A Special Thank You
We were positively overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of heartfelt comments and wishes here and on Facebook from our friends and readers last Friday and over the weekend. We thought long and hard about whether or not to share our experience of Katie's scary incident during her wellness exam at the vet. And how to share it.

Your love and concern for all of us touched us more than you can imagine. You are family to us.
