A Foxy Lunch Invitation

WAFFLES:  Boss? Have you seen the new neighbor? He looks kind of funny, for a cat.

KATIE:  He's no cat, Waffles. He's a FOX.  He'd have you for lunch.

WAFFLES:  Wow, you think so? If I'm lucky, maybe he'd serve me chicken!

Mr. Fox in the Morning
We've seen our neighborhood fox a few times now, though this is the first time Glogirly has been able to get a photo of him. There are quite a few fox in our canyon, but they're very shy and usually steer clear of humans.

The only time we ever seem to see this cute little guy is in the morning. He'll come trotting down the middle of our dirt road and find a boulder to sun himself on. Glogirly took this photo through our kitchen window with the longest lens she could grab. Once she had a nice shot, she snuck out the door to try and get just a few feet closer.

Not sure if fox can see colors, but if they can, that might explain why he scampered away so quickly. She had her bright red robe and slippers on. Probably not a wise wardrobe choice!

    1. We agree! We don't see him often, so when we do it's really special.

    1. How wonderful! They're such a beautiful animal. We have a silver fox that trots through our property sometimes. He's all black with a snow-white tip on his tail.

  4. Glogirly was a pretty red fox to him! You are so lucky with all this wildlife. We have a fox too in our neighborhood. One time a mama bear and her cub walked right beside our living room window and every year we have a mama and papa groundhog that have babies and made themselves a den at our house Foundation. We have big pileated woodpeckers, owls, hawks, squirrels of course and chipmunks that Frank loves to run after. I guess we have our share of wildlife too! Sorry Waffles, they don't bring chicken.

    1. WOW! You sure do have a lot of wildlife! We've yet to see an owl though. Gloman would LOVE to photograph an owl. We keep telling him that all he needs to do is take Katie's picture because so often she looks just like an owl! LOL!

    1. Yes it is! Fortunately most people that live up here in our canyon know that feeding and engaging with wildlife can often be a death sentence for them. We always keep our distance...though we've usually got a nice long camera lens handy! LOL!

  10. He looks a little thin, do you think that is why he is coming around? BTW LOVE your pillow on the chair and your furniture, just gorgeous! catchatwithcarenandcody

    1. He's actually filled out a little bit since the fall. Probably a thicker coat for winter. But all of the fox we've seen are very long and lean.

So glad you like the pillow! It's one of our faves! (looks a little like Waffles)

  14. That's such a great photo! Z-Girl says that when she lived in MD, her bedroom looked out to a backyard that joined with a state park. Under her dad's shed, a mama fox had put her 4 baby fox. One winter's morning, after a fresh snow, Z-girl watched as mama had the babies come out to play. They rolled around in the snow and had so much fun. She can still remember their pretty little tails swirling around in the white powder, with mama sitting and observing the surrounding for any intruders.
Although this was a very sweet sight, Z-girl was scared for her kitties as fox will indeed go after cats! Luckily, mama fox relocated everyone pretty quickly and the danger was averted.
Waffles, as cute as your neighbor is, he or she will not share chicken with you, we don't think!

  15. Wowza, we have seen a fox in our suburban neighborhood too. He was just off the patio the other day. Mum has only gotten some distance shots, none when he was close.

Here is a link to a fox family playing at the UW-Madison campus.

  16. Waffles and Katie, you are so lucky!! You get to see all sorts of critters. We've seen squirrels, rabbits, eagles, ducks and geese. Mom says that many years ago there was a deer in the neighborhood. However, that was long before we were created. You have a primo spot for watching the world. Your neighbor fox is looking mighty regal. Great shot that your mom got.

  19. That's so cool that you have fox by your house, Waffles. But Katie is right ... that dude probably has some not-so-friendly food preferences.
