Before And After

Hi everyone, Katie here.

Remember how I told you that Glogirly has lost the equivalent of 10 of me?

That's in part why Life Time Fitness picked her to throw out the
first pitch at the Minnesota Twins game last Friday. And remember that giant screen at the ballpark? Well I thought you might like to see some of the before and after pictures they put up on it.

Glogirly thought long and hard about whether or not she wanted to share these photos. But I told her, heck... after having them enlarged to 50+ feet high on that big ballpark screen, what's the big whoop with showing them on my little blog? We hope that maybe they will inspire someone out there who needs just a little push, a little encouragement. Glogirly says that if she can do it, anyone can. She says the hardest part for her was not giving in to excuses, being patient with the ups and downs and saying goodbye to her beloved jelly beans. (specifically, bubble gum flavored Jelly Belly's.)

Lots of people have asked Glogirly how she lost the weight and what keeps her motivated.

She says that her unexpected diagnosis of diabetes in December of 2008 was a big motivator.

She also says that Me & Gloman were motivators... she wants to be around for a long time because she loves us and thinks we're cute.

But the real motivator was herself.

She decided she wanted to change her life. She realized that no one could do that for her except HER. And she was determined to do it. The biggest things she changed were the way she eats and exercises. She took a well thought out approach and learned as much as she could about healthy nutrition and exercise. Then she took one day at a time. She never went on a "diet." Diets are temporary. She knew she needed to change her lifestyle and change it forever.

She says she's really happy she doesn't have 10 of me hanging around anymore. She also says the world only needs one of me.

I'm not sure I like the tone with which she said that.

  1. Congratulations on your success and on your willingness and kindness in trying to encourage others with your story...I have never had to lose a lot of weight, but know losing 5-10 lbs. is difficult enough, so I am very impressed with your tenacity and dedication to your goal...You really look fabulous!

  2. Losing weight is really hard if you're not committed to a new lifestyle. Congratulations to Glogirly for going about it in a sane fashion. And, yes, Katie, you and Gloman are very cute.

  5. Glogirly did awesomely well ~ congratulations. But please tell her from us, she was beautiful before and is beautiful now (wiv or wiv owt the weight).

It's impawtant to be healthy though and nobuddy wants diabetes ~ so if being slim helps it is well worth it.

Mom's sister was diagnosed last year (even though she only weighed 8 stone) and she has managed to control her type 2 with diet.

But sadly, Mom's son (age 34) was diagnosed this year even though he is very slim and healthy and fit. He's struggling with type 1 and is not feeling at all well at the moment. It's a worry. He may hafta have injections.

So the upshot is, we are THRILLED for Glogirly.

It's a brave and confident woman who lets her face be plastered up on the really big screen! Brava!

  11. Congratulations! But not so much for the weight-loss as for becoming healthier. There's too much focus on being thin, when some of us don't have a thin body type and never will, no matter what the scale says. So I think Glogirly had the right idea to focus on a lifestyle change for health, for her Self. Because you can be beautiful at any weight--it's not what the scale says. It's how you feel, how happy you are, how mentally, emotionally and physically healthy! :-)

  16. Hi Katie

First I have to tell you that final picture of you left us speechless, that is definitely glamour girl purrfect!

It amazes us that your Glogirl and our Momma had very similiar situations ... we don't know if your Glogirl had weight issues her whole life like ours, but finally in 2007 Momma was diagnosed with Diabetes also and had to make a decision -- which path -- right or left, left or right. We are glad Momma made the RIGHT choice and lost 100+ pounds too. She pondered things and even though she had doctors wanting to do WLS she said NO! So she feels like she did it the only way she could. The right food and the right exercise. She wishes she could run like your GloGirl, but she has to settle for fast walking on this strange machine which goes nowhere.

Concats to your Glogirl because it does take a lot of determination especially when there are triple digits to lose.

But once it is your health, there really is only one RIGHT choice.

  18. That is absolutely awesome! Mom says she needs to lose about 40 of us! MOL, she needs to lose about 40 lbs. She's so crazy.

  19. What an inspiration you are! Mama only needs to lose one of each of us, and she is going to use your stories as motivation. You can't imagine the impact you are making on people by being brave enough to not only change yourself, but showing people your before and after. Changes are never easy, but they need to come from within to really make a difference. Bravo, Glogirly!

  20. Glogirly is rightly proud of this achievement. And she is right about her posting about it to motivate other people. She looks fabulous!!! Many concats from all of us.

  27. Katie tell your mom that good job. It really does take a life change to lose that weight and it looks like you really did do that. That is so good. You do really look great. Have a good week end and no gum drops.

  28. Congratulations on your new look!! I must say that you were perfectly lovely before, but now you are absolutely fabulous and most importantly HAPPY!! YOU GO GLOGIRLY!!!

  29. Trust me that was a compliment to you Katie. She loves you so much she just wants you to share all her love with instead of another kitty to have to split it with.
And congrats to your bean. Our bean is in the opposite situation. She terribly needs to GAIN another 20lb, but for her, that's a lifetime struggle. We've tried everything on her, but not even holding her hostage in bed for a week does anything!

  30. The running picture is really fantastic. Must be so inspirational too.

And we kind of understand what Glogirly means: to be ruled by one Katie is great. But ten might be a bit much.

  31. Katie, We are so proud of Glogirly! Our Kat Daddy has diabetes and it's not something he'd EVER wish on anybody. Our Mommy thinks you, your Girl & Gloman are very cute.

I know how proud you must be Katie. You are clearly excellent inspiration (and love that last pic). I need to encourage Mom too!

  34. Glorirly did so great! I think 10 of you would be AWESOME, but not hanging on Glogirly.

  35. That's an impressive accomplishment! And your human did it the right way - through a permanent life and attitude change, not a temporary "diet" (which never works anyhow). My human writes about fitness sometimes and works out most days, and even though I think she looks funny when she's doing it, she says it makes her feel great, almost like a catnip high!

  36. I can't decide who's foxier - you or your lovely Mummy!
