The Day Everything Changed #WafflesWednesday

Once Upon a Time...
Approximately five years, three months, four days, and 8 hours ago, everything changed. That's the moment in time Glogirly fell in love with a tiny orange kitten. She named him Waffles before she even met him, despite the fact she had no idea if his personality would match his name. If you've been reading our blog for as long as a couple of days or so, you already know it does.

Soon after his arrival, like 60 seconds, heads were spinning. Especially Katie's.

It was at that moment that Katie became known as the Boss to the furry orange whirlwind and here on our blog. You could say it was a Fasten Your Seatbelts kind of moment.

After a few days in kitten quarantine, the door to Waffles' new world opened. Here's how that first face-to-face encounter went.

KATIE:  So this is what you look like.

WAFFLES:  Who are you? Are you my mom? You don't look like my mom?

KATIE:  I'm NOT your mom.

WAFFLES:  So if you're not my mom, who are you?

KATIE:  I'm the Boss of you.

WAFFLES:  Nice to meet you, Boss of You.

KATIE:  I'm not the Boss of ME, I'm the Boss of YOU.

WAFFLES:  Ok, nice to meet you, Boss of You.

KATIE:  You can call me just Boss.

WAFFLES:  Ok, Just Boss. So is Just your first name and Boss your last name? Or–

KATIE:  *sigh* This is going to be a long blog post.

WAFFLES:  So Just Boss, do you want to play? There's LOTS of cool toys here! Are they all yours, Just Boss?

KATIE:  It's Boss. Not Just Boss. Just Boss.

WAFFLES:  Wow, things are really confusing here.

KATIE:  It's pretty simple, Waffles. You only have to remember two things.
1. I'm the Boss.
2. Personal space. Always maintain an appropriate distance.

WAFFLES:  You mean like this?

KATIE:  Too close! Too close?

All-Access
After that first face-to-face, Glogirly kept a close eye on Waffles and Katie. Whenever she was home, Waffles enjoyed an all-access pass to the whole house. Still, for a few days, she'd tuck him into bed for the night inside the kitten room.

She couldn't take the cute pink nose peeking through the door crack for very long though, and within just a few days, Waffles was officially OUT.

Spreadsheet for Santa

WAFFLES:  I'm ready for Santa, Boss. Emailed him my spreadsheet and everything.

KATIE:  Email? Spreadsheet?

WAFFLES:  Duh, Boss. Santa's gone digital, you know. I need to facetime him and make sure he has my list.

KATIE:  Waffles, I think you're overlooking what Christmas is all about. It's about giving, not receiving.

WAFFLES:  I know, Boss. That's why I GAVE Santa my list.

Oh, Waffles

Despite the fact that Waffles has likely appeared on Santa's naughty list multiple times throughout the year, he scores points every single day with his happy personality and loving affection.

Katie loves giving and receiving love too. She's just a little more ladylike about it. And prefers to do it without wearing a Santa coat.

Tail Envy #WafflesWednesday

WAFFLES:  Did you know my tail is almost TWICE as long as the Boss' tail? She calls me a nature freak.

KATIE:  Freak of Nature, Waffles. FREAK of NATURE.

WAFFLES:  Jeez, Boss. You don't have to freak out on me.

KATIE:  I'm not freaking out, Waffles. You're the–

WAFFLES:   Boss, if you like my tail so much, just say so and I'll borrow it to you.

KATIE:  A 15" striped orange tail? *shakes head* I don't know how you mancats walk around with those things.

About Today's Photos
Today's tail pics are from a number of our favorite posts. Waffles' ego may have grown over the years, but his magnificent, mancat-tail is holding strong at 15". That's right, ladies...15" of orange, striped hunka-hunka love.

Cuppa Waffles

Today's post is from our #WafflesWednesday Greatest Hits Collection. While Glogirly and Gloman are busy galavanting around Rocky Mountain National Park, and Katie and Waffles are watching the clock in anticipation of meal time, we're sharing some of our past fan favorites.

WAFFLES:  Hey Boss! It's Wednesday morning. Have you had your cuppa George yet?

KATIE:  George??? Don't you mean Joe?

WAFFLES:  Joe? Who's Joe?

KATIE:  Cuppa Joe? You know, coffee?

WAFFLES:  Cats don't drink coffee, Boss. Even YOU know that.

KATIE:  Of course I know that. You're the one that brought up Cuppa George. Which, by the way, makes no sense at all. I'm just trying to explain that it's Cuppa Joe, not George.

WAFFLES:  Boss?

KATIE:  Waffles.

WAFFLES:  Maybe you should just switch to decaf.

KATIE:  Maybe should switch to decaf???

...15 minutes later

About Today's Photos
(...or rather, that last photo)
Sometimes the camera freezes an expression you just can't see with the naked eye. The beginning of a yawn or meow can turn a seemingly ordinary cat into ... well, into what you see in that last photo.

Of course in the case of Waffles, this kind of expression is far more common than you might think. He's definitely a cat that can go from lazy to maniac in less than 60 seconds.

Cuppa Waffles
In case you're wondering what that cool 'cup' is that Waffles is lounging in, it's his sporty Sleepypod convertible. (a.k.a. his Sleepypod with the top down.)

Digging Up Some Dirt #WafflesWednesday

WAFFLES:  Hey Boss, why is Glogirly playing in her litterbox?

KATIE:  Waffles, that's not a litter box. She's working on landscaping the front of the house.

WAFFLES:  I don't know, Boss. That's a LOT of dirt. And she's digging around in it like she has to go or something.

KATIE: Seriously, Waffles. I sincerely doubt Glogirly is going to use her new flower bed as a, well... you know.

WAFFLES:  She's squatting, Boss! She's squatting!

KATIE:  Pretty sure she's planting, Waffles.

WAFFLES:  Now she's covering up something!

WAFFLES:  This landscaping stuff looks pretty suspicious if you ask me.

KATIE:  Well, it's a good thing I didn't ask you.

Digging Up Some Dirt
Now that the summer weather has moved in, Glogirly has apparently caught a landscaping bug. When we moved into our new mountain house, the front was a little lacking in terms of curb appeal. Ok, so there are no curbs out here. But there was plenty of room for improvement. Glogirly drew up some ideas then consulted a local expert in native plants and high elevation gardening. Enter her new friend, Tom, from Native Nursery in Golden, CO. Tom stepped in to help Glogirly select beautiful and colorful plantings that will thrive at 8,300'. He even made a trip up the canyon road to deliver everything and help position the plants. All 85 of them. (!)

And he loves cats. So we love Tom.

Glogirly is putting the finishing touches on everything and will share photos soon! She's pretty excited because this is her first-ever project like this. She's lived in condos and townhomes for as many years as she can remember, so her landscaping adventures didn't stray far from a potted geranium.

Now she's got cool sounding plants with names like Little Trudy Catmint, First Love Dianthus and Little Devil Ninebark. Don't worry, it doesn't really bark.

Serving Up Handsome #WafflesWednesday

WAFFLES:  It's about time we have a true #WafflesWednesday around here. The ladies need a full serving of handsome.

WAFFLES: And the Boss says I'm full of handsome.

Or...full of something.

Pretty sure it's handsome though.

Definitely handsome.

About Today's Photos
Glogirly is a sucker for Waffles and his endless expressions. He's a cat who loves life with every whisker, every nose freckle, every furry inch of his being. And when she's able to capture that in a photo, she can't stop smiling.

Waffles, we love you.

And though she seldom admits it, Katie has fond-ish feelings for you too.

When you're not hovering over her shoulder, eyeing her dinner or sleeping in her pod.

Can You See Me Now?

WAFFLES:  Do you think the Boss'll be able to find me inside my scratcher?

WAFFLES:  When she comes over to scratch I bet I can scare the you-know-what out of her.

KATIE:  You know what??? I can totally see you, Waffles.

WAFFLES:  Can you see me now?

KATIE:  Not if I look away.

About Today's Photos
The master bathroom scratcher is one of the most popular in the house. Every morning when Glogirly is drying her hair and putting on her makeup, Katie and Waffles can be found competing for prime scratcher position. Not only is it a great place to scratch, it's also got an awesome view.

Don't be fooled by the snow in this photo from a couple of months ago. The white stuff is long gone and now that the weather is warm and beautiful, it's also a great spot for window whiffing and bird watching.

The Blue One #WafflesWednesday

WAFFLES:  Hey Boss, are you using this ottoman?

KATIE:  Does it look like I'm using this ottoman?

WAFFLES:  Uh, no?

KATIE:  There's another ottoman right behind you, Waffles. Immediate seating available.

WAFFLES:  But I like this one, Boss. The blue one.

KATIE:  You liking this one has nothing to do with it being pink, blue or any other color.

WAFFLES:  Pink? Wow, Boss. You need to get your eyes checked.

About Today's Photos
For compact, extra seating in our downtown apartment, we've got a couple of small cushy ottomans. One is yellow, the other blue. Each are coveted napping and grooming platforms. Two cats, two ottomans. Perfect, right? Wrong.

That is when it comes to Waffles. The only ottoman he's interested in is the one Katie is using. Katie is onto his tactics though and she's not afraid to stand her ground, or rather stand her ottoman.

Snow Hooky #WafflesWednesday

WAFFLES:  Glogirly says we're playing Snow Hooky today on account of it's snowing like crazy outside.

WAFFLES:  So, what's a hooky? Do I need ice skates to play? How about a hooky puck?

KATIE:  Please make him stop. I thought today was supposed to be all about napping by the fire. Quietly napping.

It's Snowing in the Mountains!
While people are donning their flip flops back in Minnesota, we're hunkering down for a snowy, wintry nap here in Colorado. We're in desperate need of moisture here so the soft falling flakes are not only pretty to look at but necessary in preventing wildfires. Apparently, our kitty snow dance has worked!

And it's perfect napping weather. Ok, truth be told, ANY weather is perfect napping weather.

We're all stocked up with plenty of cat food and Glogirly food. The Directv went out, but Netflix is Netflixing just fine.

The snowy view from our master bathroom.

And a Very Special Thank You ♥︎
Our hearts are overflowing after all of your sweet comments both here and on Facebook in response to our Monday blog post, Penny for Your Thoughts - The Story Behind our Big Move to the Mountains. The kindness and love you show for all of us has touched our hearts more than you know.

We're super excited to share our new adventures as residents of this beautiful canyon we're calling home. Many of you know that Glogirly is something of an interior design geek, so we're also excited to start giving you a virtual tour of our new mountain house through the eyes of Katie and Waffles.

Flip-N-Roll #WafflesWednesday

WAFFLES:  Hello Ladies. I'm just hanging out here on the new rug, being all handsome and stuff.

WAFFLES:  It's a lot of work keeping up this much handsome. And grooming. Lots of grooming.

WAFFLES:  Woops, missed a spot.

Waffles' Flip-N-Roll
For most cats, reaching all the right spots during bath time requires mastering a few simple yoga poses. Waffles is not most cats. He's developed his own unique technique we call the Flip-N-Roll. He flips and flops on his back, almost like a fish, while licking everything from his arms to his tummy to...well, you know. He'll often throw in a chortle or two for good measure. He may be a little goofy, but he's got the cleanest armpits of any cat we know.
