Holiday Houseguests INCOMING! Ready, Set, It's a FELIWAY® Giveaway

This giveaway is sponsored by FELIWAY®
WAFFLES:  Something smells funny, Boss. And not ha-ha funny.

KATIE:  What, did you sleep right through the doorbell?

WAFFLES:  What doorbell?

KATIE:  You know. The bell. On the outside of the door. The one people ring when they want to come inside.

WAFFLES:  So that's what the ding-dong sound means. I thought it meant the man in brown shorts brought us a new box.

KATIE: We have houseguests, Waffles.

WAFFLES:  What? No one told me.

KATIE:  I'm telling you now.

Thanksgiving is just a few days away. That means a revolving door of people invading our space, making lots of noise, and smelling up the place with their stuff for the next few weeks. We won't be in the clear until 2019.

WAFFLES:  2019??? That's like NEXT YEAR!

Holiday Houseguest-Ready
Now that Halloween is in our rearview mirror and we've got a couple of snowstorms under our belt, Glogirly is already untangling holiday lights and sorting ornaments. Usually, we wait until Thanksgiving weekend, but she wants to be ready for guests early. Ok, truth be told, she's just super excited for Christmas and has a thing for twinkle lights. And when you have a red kitchen, well...the holiday spirit is there all year long.

Getting ready for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukah means getting ready for guests too. And a big part of that for us is FELIWAY®.

We like to greet our overnight visitors with smiles, meows, and a fresh bottle of FELIWAY® CLASSIC Spray. A couple of spritzes on their luggage and boots helps to keep Katie and Waffles feeling comfortable and secure.

Ok, so Waffles typically warms up to new guests VERY quickly.

But for Katie, accepting new people takes time.

Another important item in our houseguest arsenal is the FELIWAY® CLASSIC Diffuser. We keep a couple plugged in when we've got visitors. Particularly in areas where people and cats spend the most time. (Like Waffles' favorite room - the kitchen)

How Does It Work?
Cats communicate through natural messages released in the air called pheromones. These pheromones give them a sense of safety and belonging.

FELIWAY® mimics naturally occurring feline pheromones, or "messages."
It's important to understand the difference between these feline "messages" as well as the difference between the FELIWAY® CLASSIC Diffuser and MultiCat Diffuser in order to select the best formula for your needs. We use both depending on the situation.

Happy Messages - For Stress Due to Houseguests and Visitors
You've probably seen your cat rub their face against corners, furniture and even you. As they mark their territory, they leave an odorless message called a Feline Facial Pheromone. These happy messages provide comfort and security. The arrival of houseguests can certainly upset this apple cart. The FELIWAY® CLASSIC Diffuser and the FELIWAY® CLASSIC Spray deliver these happy messages, helping cats to feel more comfortable and secure when newcomers are in the house.

Harmony Messages - For Cat-to-Cat Animosity and Stress
Momma cats communicate with their kittens through natural messages released into the air. These Cat Appeasing Pheromones help to maintain harmony and social bonds between cats of all ages. The FELIWAY® MultiCat Diffuser helps to reduce conflict between cats living together by creating "harmony messages." It may help decrease fighting, chasing, blocking, and even staring, which for us is the perfect storm of displacement aggression behaviors.

How to Properly Use the Diffuser Plug-In
  • Plug into an outlet in the room where the cats spend the most of their time. We like to position a second in our guest room as well.
  • We've found it takes about 24 hours to kick in.
  • Leave plugged in continuously.
  • One vial will last approximately 30 days. The diffuser should be replaced about every 6 months.

Pick-Your-Own Giveaway!
We're celebrating the holidays with a special GIVEAWAY! Three lucky winners will receive their choice of any one these three FELIWAY® products.
  • FELIWAY® CLASSIC Diffuser Starter Kit

When Being a Brat is Normal: 6 Tips for Dealing with Displacement Aggression after a Vet Visit - Plus a FELIWAY® Giveaway

WAFFLES:  Whoa, whoa, whoa...is that you, Boss?

This post is sponsored by FELIWAY®

KATIE:  What do you mean, Waffles? Of COURSE it's me.

WAFFLES:  You smell funny. Not ha-ha funny. More like...I-don't-even-know-who-you-are funny.

KATIE:  Seriously, Waffles. I spend one afternoon at the vet and it's like you've lost your head. Not to mention your sense of smell.

Our Experience with Displacement Aggression
Years ago, after Waffles was just past kittenhood, we noticed that every time he or Katie would go to the vet, there'd be a period of time after we got home that Waffles would exhibit some very out of character behavior.

Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky, (a.k.a Waffles), who'd ordinarily follow Katie around like she was his best friend, was all of a sudden stalking her, staring at her, hissing, and even blocking her when she'd try to walk away. This would often last for a few hours and sometimes even into the next day. Katie's behavior toward Waffles never changed, though we're sure Waffles surprising behavior caused her stress.

Our vet explained to us that displacement aggression is quite common, even among cats who ordinarily get along great.

It wasn't until earlier this year, when Katie underwent extensive dental surgery, that we realized how intense and long-lasting this unwanted behavior can be. Katie had three of her canines and one incisor extracted. It was a difficult and long surgery that required general anesthetic and a day-long stay at the vet. Katie did great by the way, and has since been getting along fine with her lone fang. But the aftermath of her surgery, when she came back home, was extremely difficult for Waffles.

Katie came home smelling nothing like herself. She was on pain medication and antibiotics for about a week, which likely affected how she smelled to Waffles. But the biggest contributing factor to the way in which Waffles was acting out was the fact that Katie wasn't able to groom herself for nearly 10 days. Her mouth probably felt very different to her. She had to get used to her new normal. Even Glogirly could tell that Katie didn't smell anything like she usually does. And with a cat's sense of smell roughly 14 times more sensitive than a human's, it's no wonder Waffles was dramatically affected.

It's easy to become frustrated when a cat is acting out and presenting unwanted behavior. This was really a test for Glogirly's patience. She had to remind herself that Waffles was confused, scared, and probably wondering what happened to his friend. Between getting used to her new mouth and getting hissed and growled at by her longtime feline companion, Katie was also confused.

Glogirly pulled out every trick she could think of in her book to get everyone through what was an incredibly long week.

With so many of our friends and readers going through similar veterinary procedures with their own kitties, we hope our experience and how we dealt with it will help.

Dealing with Displacement Aggression:
6 Tips to Restoring Peace & Harmony

1. The Ride-Along
Whenever Katie or Waffles has an appointment at the vet, they both go. This way, both come home smelling like the vet clinic. Even if Waffles never gets out of the carrier.  It's not a 100% perfect solution, but it can lessen the animosity once everyone is home.  If your clowder is much larger, perhaps bringing only the kitty who is most prone to displacement aggression along for the ride would lessen the unwanted behavior once home.

2. The Quarantine
Depending upon the degree of aggression observed once we return home from the vet, sometimes a quarantine is in order. We've never experienced anything verging on physical harm, but it's extremely stressful for all involved. In this situation, a time-out can be very beneficial. Our home office is a perfect place for a quarantine. It's a kitty-comfortable room with a litter box, food and water, plenty of windows, and a place to scratch, nap, and play. Most important, it has a door.

For regular vet visits, the quarantine may only last a couple of hours. But back in January, when Katie had her dental surgery, the quarantine became necessary for a few days. Waffles spent his time in the office, Katie had the rest of the house, and Glogirly split her time between the two.

3. Room Swapping
When it's necessary to separate cats for an extended period of time, like a day or two, a controlled room swap can be very helpful. After Katie's surgery, Waffles spent a few days in our office, separated from Katie. Once it looked like Katie was feeling up to it, Glogirly put Katie in the office for a couple of hours while Waffles could explore where Katie had been spending her time. This helped him become acquainted with her smell again. Once Waffles was done investigating, Glogirly swithed them back.

4.  FELIWAY® MultiCat Diffuser
If you're a regular reader of our blog, you probably know we use a number of FELIWAY® products in our home. When it comes to displacement aggression or even just stress or tension between Waffles and Katie, we've found the FELIWAY® MultiCat Diffuser to be extremely helpful.

It's important to understand the difference between the FELIWAY® CLASSIC Diffuser and the MultiCat Diffuser, especially when dealing with displacement aggression.

The FELIWAY® CLASSIC Diffuser provides a sense of comfort and security by creating "happy messages." The kind of comfort and security a cat feels when they rub their face against furniture, people, and even other cats. It can also give cats a sense of security when new visitors come to the house or when strange noises can be heard.

The FELIWAY® MultiCat Diffuser helps to reduce conflict between cats living together by creating "harmony messages." It may help decrease fighting, chasing, blocking, and even staring, which for us is the perfect storm of displacement aggression behaviors.

5. Yes, Socks!
This is a simple and effective trick that has worked wonders for us. After vet visits, Glogirly rubs Waffles' head and mouth area with one of her unwashed socks, then rubs that scent onto Katie, and vice versa. It's all about Waffles and Katie getting comfortable with each other's scents again. Glogirly's scent is familiar and calming to them as well.

6. Patience
This is by far the hardest part. Every cat and every situation is different. When it comes to displacement aggression, it may just take an hour or two, a day or two, or even a whole week. Slow and steady wins the race.

7 Tips to Kitty Bliss - De-Stress Your Pet Giveaway

WAFFLES:  Hey Boss, do I stress you out?

KATIE:  Only when we're in the same room, Waffles.

WAFFLES:  How about in the same window sill?

This post is sponsored by FELIWAY®

Our friends and readers who have been with us over the years are no strangers to Katie and Waffles' often complicated relationship. They've come a long way since way back in 2012 when a spirited orange kitten named Waffles moved into the family, much to Katie's chagrin, and started taking our blog by storm.

We like to think we have a very peaceful and calm home. And for the most part, we do. But even still, stress is no stranger to us. We've heard from many of you who have experienced the same. Stress can sneak its way into your home in the most subtle of ways. It's not all sunshine, rainbows and catnip. Especially for cats.

That includes Katie and Waffles.

What some cat parents don't realize is that many unwanted behaviors can actually be a cat's natural reaction to stress. Things like fighting at food time or inappropriate scratching are just a couple examples of behaviors commonly linked to stress. Not knowing what to do about it makes it even more stressful for pets and their humans.

April is De-Stress Your Pet Month
We're helping our friends at FELIWAY®  share some very simple tips on how to create a peaceful and calm home for your and your cats. Our 7 Tips to Kitty Bliss can absolutely help to improve and maintain the well being and happiness of your furry family members in ways that are incredibly easy to incorporate into your daily lives.

7 Tips to Kitty Bliss
1. Mitts Off My Dish!
If there's ever a time for stress to enter center stage, it's mealtime. At least that's how it is for us. Maintaining individual food and water locations can help reduce that mealtime animosity. Not only do Katie and Waffles have their own food dishes and watering stations, we make sure they can't see each other when eating. Their food dishes are positioned on opposite sides of the kitchen island so that neither of them feel the need to look over their shoulders.

2. Food, Glorious Food
It's truly remarkable what a game changer a good diet can be. As obligate carnivores, cats nutritional needs are not only very specific to their species, but crucial for them to thrive and survive. As we've transitioned Waffles and Katie to a protein rich diet, we've noticed they're so much more satisfied. In fact, they rarely beg for food or treats anymore. Eating a healthy and protein rich diet is something we believe contributes to their overall well being and longevity.

3. Serenity Now
Sometimes Katie and Waffles love to get away from it all. It's important for any cat to have a place they can retreat to where they feel comfortable and safe. We keep their cozy carriers in a large walk-in closet. It's quiet, private and given it's the warmest room in the hose, it's the perfect spot for napping, sleeping and safely hiding out when the plumber is here or houseguests have arrived.

Keeping their carriers open and accessible also helps to define them as more than just a means of transport to the vet. Katie and Waffles are so comfortable in theirs in fact, they sleep in them just about every night.

4. He Must Work Out
By now Glogirly is thinking these tips aren't just appropriate for cats. Good food, her own dish, a comfy bed, and exercise. Let's hope she's paying attention!

We've lost count of how many times we've been told by vets and behaviorists that play is often the answer to any number of unwanted behaviors. Animosity between cats and destructive behavior can be curtailed quickly with just a little daily playtime. Tiring them out both physically and mentally is key. Play helps tap into their instinctual behaviors to hunt and stalk. Not only will this help to cut down on that unwanted behavior, it will also help to strengthen the human-cat bond.

5. Puzzle Power
Cats, especially Waffles, aren't necessarily the best at multitasking. Food puzzles keep them busy and occupied.

6. Chopin for Cats
Glogirly often has music playing throughout the house. She's found it to be a soothing alternative to the overabundance of news on TV. And whenever she leaves the house, she always puts on classical music for Katie and Waffles. The sound can make them feel less alone and can also mask scary sounds like planes, trains, and automobiles.

7. Scratch, Scratch, Scratch
Cats need to scratch. It's instinctual. Most cat parents don't want this kind of instinctual attention paid to their sofas and chairs though. Scolding them for scratching the furniture and not providing an appropriate alternative can cause stress for cats and their humans. We keep some kind of scratching post in every room of the house.

FELIWAY®-Another Secret Weapon for Stress
In addition to these simple tips, FELIWAY® products can further help bring a sense of calm to your furry family and alleviate many stress-related behaviors. We use their products all the time. In the house, in the car, even our vet uses them in her clinic.

How Does It Work?
Cats communicate through natural messages released in the air called pheromones. These pheromones give them a sense of safety and belonging.

FELIWAY® mimics three naturally occurring feline pheromones, or "messages."

Happy Messages
You've probably seen your cat rub their face against corners, furniture and even you. As they mark their territory, they leave an odorless message called a Feline Facial Pheromone. These happy messages provide comfort and security.

Harmony Messages
Momma cats communicate with their kittens through natural messages released into the air. These Cat Appeasing Pheromones help to maintain harmony and social bonds between cats of all ages.

Territory Messages
As you might expect, this is how cats communicate with each other. For example, when they scratch an object in their space, they leave both visible (like scratch marks) and invisible Territory Messages that indicate this is mine

How Do We Love FELIWAY®? Let Us Count the Ways with a Special Valentines Giveaway

This post is sponsored by FELIWAY®
WAFFLES:  Hey Boss! Wanna know how many ways I love you?

KATIE:  How long is this going to take, Waffles. I don't have all day you know.

WAFFLES:  Don't worry, I'll make it fast, Boss.

KATIE:  Fast?

WAFFLES:  On account of how it's going to take you an even LONGER time to tell me all the ways you love me

KATIE:  Hmmm...that's okay, Waffles. I only need a minute or so.

WAFFLES:  Or so?? Or so is a really long time though, right? 'Cause you have lots of ways you love me.

How Do We Love FELIWAY®?
We figure there's no better time than now, with Valentines Day exactly one week away, to profess our love for each other and our love for FELIWAY. Ok, so Waffles and Katie's relationship status may be defined as complicated, but that's actually one of the many reasons we DO love Feliway so much.

In fact, we love them so much...
Let us count the ways!

Pssst!  The three lucky winners of this week's Valentines giveaway will have an opportunity to choose their favorite Feliway product as their prize. Maybe it's one you've used before and love, or maybe it's something new you've been wanting to try. It's your choice! Maybe we can help you decide.

1. The Multi-Cat Household with those Clashing Purr-sonalities
It's no secret that Waffles and Katie don't always see eye to eye. Unless of course they're engaged in one of their intense stare-downs. The FELIWAY MultiCat Diffuser helps cats get along better at home. Cats communicate with each other through natural messages, or pheromones, released in the air. FELIWAY mimics these feline messages, helping cats to feel calm, comfortable and secure.

We like to call it our peacemaker.

It's easy to use. Just plug into an outlet in an area of the house the cats spend a lot of time in. For us, that's the kitchen. Sometimes though, we'll move ours around or add an extra in another part of the house. They're especially helpful for times when we've got houseguests staying with us or friends popping over for dinner. Our vet even has a diffuser in every exam room.

Each vial lasts about a month and replacements can be purchased separately.

2. Armed and Ready for Houseguests
Ever since we moved to the mountains, we've had a significant uptick in visitors. Though Katie and Waffles would like to think it's their celibricat-status attracting so many overnight guests, it probably has more to do with the gorgeous views.

We keep our guestroom stocked with FELIWAY Spray and Wipes. They're perfect for helping to neutralize that foreign visitor smell. A few quick spritzes of the spray is great for covering the guest bedroom and bath. We also encourage our guest to wipe the outside of their suitcases and bags with the FELIWAY wipes.

It's important to never spray directly on your cat. It's recommended you let the spray settle for 10-15 minutes before letting the cats into the area. We use the spray in our car too, for those often stressful rides to the vet. Spraying ahead of time and giving it 15 minutes to dissipate is especially important in an enclosed space like a car.

3. Saving Paws, Claws, and Furniture

FELIWAY's newest product is called Feliscratch. Not only does it help to redirect unwanted scratching, it's providing an excellent alternative to the horribly inhumane practice of declawing. Sadly, many cat parents just don't know what's involved in the procedure, or the pain and complications cats may live with for the rest of their lives.

We couldn't be more thrilled that FELIWAY is taking such a strong stand against declawing and are so very pleased they have developed a product to help when kitty is scratching up the sofa or the rug instead of their scratching post.

Feliscratch is very easy to use. Each package contains 9 single-use "pipettes" of liquid. Gently apply in a thin strip along the length of the scratcher. It's best to position the scratcher in the same general area as the rug, sofa, chair, or whatever your cat is inappropriately scratching. The liquid emits a pheromone that attracts kitty to it. The liquid also contains catnip as an additional attractant. And the purple color of the liquid creates a visual cue that encourages kitty to investigate the scratcher.

Saving Paws and Saving Couches with New FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY™ - Plus a Giveaway!

This post is sponsored by FELISRATCH by FELIWAY™

WAFFLES:  Hey Boss, are you about done with your holiday mani-pedi?

KATIE:  These things take time, Waffles. Meticulous grooming, cleaning between my toes and of course...LOTS of scratching on my post.

WAFFLES:  I'm an excellent scratcher.

KATIE:  No kidding, Waffles. Remember those brown chairs at the Townhouse? You really did a number on them. You're lucky Glogirly loves you and your paws more than furniture.

WAFFLES:  That was WAY back when I was a kitten.

KATIE:  And unfortunately for those chairs, that was long before FELISCRATCH.

This is BIG!
Saving Paws, Claws and Furniture
If you visit our blog regularly, you probably already know we're big fans of FELIWAY™. We regularly use their spray, wipes and diffusers to help maintain peace and harmony in our home. When we heard they were working on a product to help cat parents deal with the common problem of cats scratching furniture, rugs and other home furnishings, our ears perked right up.

Cats were born to scratch. They need to scratch. It's instinctive and natural behavior. Scratching helps to remove the dead outer layer of their claws, it allows them to mark their territory by leaving both their scent and a visual mark, and it helps them to stretch their bodies and flex their feet and claws.

But it's also destructive and often frustrating behavior when furniture gets involved. The first step to solving this dilemna is to provide scratching alternatives in every room of the house you and the cats spend the most time in. We've got posts and scratchers in the bedroom, master bath, living room, dining room, office and even the entryway. But sometimes the best laid plans can still go awry. Sometimes Waffles and even Katie will scratch where they shouldn't.

That's precisely where FELISCRATCH can come to the rescue.

How to Use
Each package contains 9 "pipettes" of the Feliscratch liquid. (3 sets of 3)

Separate and snip the small end with scissor and bend the u-shaped piece of plastic back.

Gently squeeze and apply the liquid in a thin strip along the length of the scratcher.
And that's it!

FELISCRATCH recommends reapplying once daily for seven days. (One pipette for each use)
Then one pipette at the beginning of week three and one at the beginning of week 4.

For the Science Geeks - Just How Does it Work???
FELISCRATCH contains 3 components that work together to make the magic happen-
1. Feline Interdigital Semiochemical (F.I.S), which are some really big words that mean quite simply, the pheromone from the cat's paws. Ths pheromone directs cats to scratch on the surface where the product has been applied.
2. Catnip, (great idea!) which contributes as an additional attractant to draw cats to the scratcher where the Feliscratch has been applied.
3. Blue colorant which provides a visual cue to provide a long-range attractant for the cat to investigate the scratching post.

Saving Claws and Saving Paws
We are thrilled that FELIWAY is taking a such a strong stand against declawing. In many countries, declawing is illegal. In our opinion, no matter how you look at it, it's inhumane. Imagine having all of your fingertips amputated at the knuckle just below your fingernail. That's very close to what happens when a cat is declawed. Sounds pretty horrific, doesn't it? Add to that the high propensity for complications, infection, chronic pain and behavioral problems like not being able to use the litterbox.

Sadly, many cat parents just don't know what's involved in the procedure, or the pain and complications cats may live with for the rest of their lives.

FELISCRATCH has launched a tongue-in-cheek campaign called Save the Couches. On the outside, it's light-hearted and humorous, but the overriding message is an important one and helps spread awareness by promoting an anti-declawing message.

If FELISCRATCH can save even one cats paws, it's worth it. Our hope is that it will help save hundreds of thousands of paws.

How's it Working for Us?
We only started testing out FELISCRATCH a couple of weeks ago, but already have noticed it's making a big impact. In order to make a good comparison, we put a second scratcher in our living room a couple of weeks before we started using it. We wanted everyone to get used to seeing a second scratcher in the space. Then we applied FELISCRATCH to just one of the scratchers and continued applying daily for a week.  Lo and behold, the scratcher we applied it to has become the scratcher of choice!

In addition, Katie has not been scratching the rug in that room (an occasional problem for her) and has instead turned her attention to the scratcher. Yay!

Where to Buy
FELISCRATCH is currently available on Amazon. (fast and free shipping for Prime members!)

We're FELIWAY® Ready for Holiday Houseguests With a Purrfect Giveaway

This giveaway is sponsored by FELIWAY®
WAFFLES:  Hey Boss, we've got a fresh one of those houseguest plug-in thingies. You know what that means...........SANTA!

KATIE:  Whoa, whoa, whoa, Waffles. Slow down. It's not even Thanksgiving yet. Just because Glogirly is a little quick with the holiday decor doesn't mean you can start talking Santa.

And I'm pretty sure that's not called a Houseguest Plug-In Thingy

WAFFLES:  Yeah, well I can't read upside down. What does it say?

KATIE:  You can't read right side up either, Waffles. It's a FELIWAY® MultiCat Diffuser Plug-In.

WAFFLES:  MULTI cat???

KATIE:  Yes, MultiCat. Like you and me. And it works for multi houseguests too.

WAFFLES:  Will it make them keep their mitts off our Christmas stockings?

KATIE:  I would think you'd want our guests to touch your stocking, Waffles. You know, to slip in some toys and treats before Santa fills it up with coal?

And no, FELIWAY® isn't about keeping people away from your stocking. It's about maintaining a sense of calm and familiarity during the influx of holiday visitors. In fact, it works on maintaining a sense of calm between just you and me, holiday or no holiday.

WAFFLES:  You mean like when you meow, "Serenity Now?"

Holiday-Ready
Now that Halloween is in our rearview mirror, Glogirly is already untangling holiday lights and sorting ornaments. Usually, we wait until Thanksgiving weekend, but she wants to be ready for guests early. Ok, truth be told, she's just super excited for Christmas this year and has a thing for twinkle lights. And when you have a red kitchen, well it's the holiday spirit is there all year long.

Getting ready for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hannukah means getting ready for guests too. And a big part of that for us is FELIWAY®.

How Does FELIWAY® Work?
You've seen your cats rub up against a piece of furniture with their mouths, right? That means they're comfortable in their environment and when they rub their cheeks like that it leaves behind a facial pheromone. It's their way of marking that particular area as safe and secure. FELIWAY® mimics this natural feline facial pheromone and helps to create that same sense of familiarity.

We've found it incredibly effective when people come to the house to stay overnight or even when we have a handyman or painter here for just an hour or two.

FELIWAY® MultiCat can also maintain peace and harmony in households with more than one cat by decreasing the intensity and frequency of that all too familiar tension between cats.

FELIWAY® isn't a drug. It's non-sedating, non-systemic, and has no known contraindications with any other treatment. In fact, there's a very good chance your own vet is already using it in their clinic and exam rooms.

Additional Uses
Traveling
Bring a diffuser with on road trips to use in hotel rooms or wherever you're staying. FELIWAY® also makes a spray that is very effective in the car.

Going to the Vet
There's a good chance you'll see FELIWAY® diffusers plugged in the next time you visit the vet.

Holiday Decorating
Position a diffuser in the same room as your holiday decor. Much like bringing in a new sofa or rug can bring a whole new set of smells into your home, so to can those holiday decorations you've had stashed in the garage all year.
