If you're looking to be pubbed traditionally, you'll need a full proposal @60 pages. If you self-pubbing I'd still go through the steps. It's good exercise. You won't need to hire a book jacket designer but you will need a developmental editor and a line editor. Let me know if you have questions. I worked months on my current proposal out at editors now. Even though my agent said it was strong and timely the market is long, tough slog. For memoir, I'd study all the successful adoption themed ones and see how yours is different. Good luck and follow your heart. If the story has to come out it will. Had to wipe...Just finished reading Another Mother. Had to wipe my eyes more than a couple of times. I identify with this story in a number of ways: I was adopted shortly after birth, having been the second child born to a teenage mother (my sister was also put up for adoption). I cannot remember NOT knowing I was adopted: My Mom and Dad firmly believed that it should never be a secret; that it should be a lesson about love. My mother always told me: "You may not have come from my body, but you are surely in my heart forever. You are my daughter in EVERY way that really matters." I was raised in a loving home, and have only wonderful memories of my childhood. Shortly before my 21st birthday, I received a letter from the adoption agency that handled my adoption: I had a half-sister who was searching for her birth mother, and during the course of that search, had learned of my birth, a little over a year after her own. I never had any real interest in looking for my biological parents, but my sister was quite determined. I asked that I not be included in that search: Both of my parents were still alive, and I felt that such a search would dishonor them. Meeting a half-sister was a different matter, so we did meet......and got along quite well. In the end, our birth mother declined to meet my sister: She had married, had two young children, and felt that the timing wasn't right. Over the years (22, to be exact), my sister and I have kept in contact, but we do not speak of my sister's initial search. It's not that we avoid it......it just doesn't come up. However, after reading this, I have to confess that I'm curious about my birth mother. A 43 year old is far more aware of her mortality than a 21 year old, and I would like to have some medical background about my biological parents. I'm also VERY curious about my other half-siblings, now grown. I wonder if the circumstances (behind my birth mother's refusal to meet my sister) have changed. The urge to search has finally hit me. Thank you for your story.......it gives me courage: The courage to ask questions. I don't need to "find myself", but a little extra info never hurts. Needless to say, my sister and I are going to be discussing it..........soon. :) XOXOKatieKinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13370491791004362762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8818202002421457399.post-74129977183840211742012-01-20T15:24:38.393-04:002012-01-20T15:24:38.393-04:00Thank you so much, T.
