Cats & Watermelons

WAFFLES:  *uuuummmph* Man, this thing is heavy. How do those Harlem Globetrotter guys do it?

KATIE:  Waffles, what on earth are you doing???

WAFFLES:  This isn't regulation size, Boss. It's too big. I don't think I can shoot hoops with it.

KATIE: Shoot hoops??? Seriously? Waffles, that's a watermelon. Not a basketball. Oh and... you're a CAT.

WAFFLES:  Wait! I've almost got it. Just have to dribble–

KATIE:  Waffles, the only thing you're capable of dribbling is food onto your chin.

WAFFLES:  He shoots! He scores! And the crowd goes WILD! *AAAAAAAHHHH!*

WAFFLES:  Hey! Where'd the crowd go?

About Today's Photos
Today's pics are from Waffles' first watermelon encounter. Glogirly had just returned home from the market and her arms were so overloaded with grocery bags, she had to set the watermelon down on the floor before she could make it to the kitchen.

We'd heard that some cats like watermelon...but not quite like this.

Can Cats Eat Watermelon?
According to PetMD, cats can eat watermelon. But, and this is a big but... the seeds must be removed. They contain compounds that can be very harmful to cats. The rinds aren't really recommended either. It's important to remember that cats are obligate carnivores and therefore incapable of digesting some types of food, in particular plant matter. So a meal of watermelon is not a good idea. But a little bite should be just fine.

  1. Poor Katie. Having to put up with all those shenanigans and a beautiful boy that isn't quite as intelligent and experienced as she is ;)

  4. I bet I would like watermelon! Whether my human would actually give me any is another thing altogether - she already told her boyfriend not to give me cantaloupe anymore because she was worried it upset my catpee ph balance.

    1. Summer, my beloved tortie Sasha loved cantaloupe more than life itself. She would risk life and limb to get to her 'lope. I asked my vet about it, and she said it was fine in moderation. Sasha had so many different t issues over the years, I was always careful about letting her have just enough to enjoy as a treat. I loved watching her devour her lope, her eyes big and bright, her purrs loud enough to hear from across the room. Check with your vet, but I'm pretty sure a little won't upset her balance in any way
